When people think of the role of a Pharmacist, they normally think of a person whose job is filling prescriptions. Filling prescriptions is one function of a pharmacist, but there are many more pharmacist career options available.

A pharmacist is a trained and educated health expert in the field of pharmacy. Pharmacists can not only be found working in Pharmacies, but also in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, home health centers, pharmaceutical research institutions, educational institutions, community organizations, and government agencies.

The following is a list of medical areas where Pharmacists can be found working:

Hospitals: In a hospital, pharmacists assist doctors with the constitution, dosage, and effects and side effects of specific medications for patients. They also educate patients about the medications that they are taking. Pharmacists are basically a part of the hospital health care team.

Pharmaceutical Industry: In the pharmaceutical field, pharmacists will study and report on the efficacy of drugs to help determine what drugs are safe for patients. They can also be involved with the marketing of drugs where they work on behalf of a drug manufacturing company to promote and sell their drug products to clinics, hospitals, etc.

Teaching: A pharmacist can be found teaching in a medical or pharmacy school. They will require a post graduate degree and experience working in the pharmacy field.

Community Pharmacy: A pharmacist can be found working in a community pharmacy which is a privately owned pharmacy that helps patients by dispensing both prescribed and non prescribed medications. They can provide assistance with community service organizations that help in-home patients get their required medications and medical information. A pharmacy technician is usually the first person you see at the local pharmacy. They’re the smiling face you see handing you your refill on your prescription or explaining to you how you take your prescription. Not many people think about what their job entails. Pharmacy techs do a variety of different tasks involving prescription medications. They prepare and dispense medication, give advice on over the counter medications and perform compounding of medications. They are also responsible for tracking inventory on medications, supplying orders and following up on payments.

Generally a pharmacy technician will work under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist but depending on the availability and the organization of the health care clinic that they work in, they may counsel patients on the proper use of medications and other management duties. About 75% of pharmacy technicians work in a retail setting, 16% work in a hospital setting, and the rest work in places like nursing homes.

The requirements to be a pharmacy tech vary from place to place. It generally requires the common knowledge and skills in pharmaceuticals that can be obtained through formal training. You will need the completion of high school or equivalent, but are not always required to have a university degree. Some community colleges and vocational schools will offer training programs. You can also be offered training through a hospital, the military, and can also obtain training through online courses. Classes that you can expect to take include, medical terminology, human physiology and disease, relevant laws, healthcare ethics, retail and hospital pharmacy practice, alternative medicine, pharmacotherapeutics and customer care.
